How to use the Easy Grader

  1. Type how many questions (or points) the test has. The chart appears straight away.
  2. Choose Number wrong or Number right, whichever you mark on the paper.
  3. For each test, type the number in Quick lookup. The score and letter show as you type, and the matching row is outlined in the chart. Press Enter to clear it for the next test.
  4. Press Print chart for a clean copy with only the chart on it.

How the score is worked out

Subtract the number wrong from the total to get the number right. Divide by the total and multiply by 100:

Score = (total minus wrong) ÷ total × 100

A student who gets 7 wrong out of 40 has 33 right. 33 ÷ 40 × 100 = 82.5%, which is a B on the standard scale.

Rounding: why the setting matters

Many teachers round scores to whole numbers. That can change the letter grade near a cut-off. On a 200-point test, 21 points wrong is exactly 89.5%. Rounded to a whole number it becomes 90%, an A. Kept to decimals it stays 89.5%, a B.

The Easy Grader always gives the letter for the number it shows, so the chart and the lookup never disagree. Pick the rounding rule your school or syllabus uses.

Half points

If you give half credit, choose Half points (0.5). The chart then lists 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and so on, and the total can be a half number too, such as 37.5.

Letter grades

The standard scale is A from 90%, B from 80%, C from 70%, D from 60% and F below 60%. The plus/minus scale splits each letter, for example A− from 90%, A from 93% and A+ from 97%. See the full table on the Grade Calculator page.

Printing the chart

Print chart prints only the chart, its title and settings, in four columns with the letter colours. Tests up to about 100 questions fit on one page. Longer charts continue on a second page.

Frequently asked questions

What is an easy grader?

It is a quick way to turn the number of wrong answers into a percentage. Teachers have long used paper slide charts for this, often called an easy grader or E-Z grader. This page does the same job on screen and prints a chart you can keep on your desk.

Can I use it for points instead of questions?

Yes. Enter the total points on the test, then the points the student lost (or earned). The math is the same.

What if questions are worth different points?

Use the total points, not the number of questions. For example, a test with 20 two-point questions and 10 one-point questions has 50 points in total.

Can I change the letter grade cut-offs?

You can switch between the standard and plus/minus scales. Custom cut-offs, such as A from 93% on a standard scale, are not available yet.
