Final Grade Calculator

Find the score you need on your final exam to finish the class with the grade you want. Works with percentages or points, and with letter grades.

How is your class graded?

A percentage, or a letter if that is all you know.

From your syllabus. If more than the final is left, add up everything remaining.

Enter your numbers and press Calculate. Your result and the math will appear here.

How this calculator works

Your class grade is a weighted average of the work you have already done and the final exam. If the final is worth 25%, everything else is worth the remaining 75%. Rearranging that average gives the score you need:

Required = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight

Weight is written as a decimal, so 25% becomes 0.25. A result above 100% means the target is out of reach without extra credit. A result at or below 0% means you have already secured it.

Worked example

You have an 88% and the final is worth 25%. To finish with a 90%: (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 96. You need a 96% on the final.

If your class uses points

Switch the calculator to Points. Say you have 412 of 480 points so far and the final is worth 120 points. The class is worth 600 points in total, so an 85% needs 510 points. You need 510 − 412 = 98 points, which is 81.67% of the final.

Frequently asked questions

What if more than the final is left?

Add up the weight of everything still to come, such as the final plus a project, and enter that total as the final exam weight. The result is the average score you need across all of it.

What does a letter grade count as?

For the grade you want, a letter counts as the lowest percentage that earns it, because that is the number you need to reach. For your current grade, a letter counts as the middle of its range, and the calculator tells you which number it used. If you know your exact percentage, enter it instead.

Does my teacher round up?

Some do and some do not. The calculator shows the exact value, so check your syllabus for the rounding rule.

Are my grades saved anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to our server.
