Grade Calculator

Work out your current grade in a class from your assignments, quizzes and tests. Use weighted percentages or points, and see what you need on the rest of the class to reach your goal.

How is your class graded?

One row per assignment or category. Enter a grade as a percentage (92), a fraction (45/50) or a letter (B), plus its weight from your syllabus. Leave the grade blank for work that is not graded yet.

Fill in your rows and press Calculate. Your grade, a row-by-row breakdown and the math will appear here.

How to use the grade calculator

  1. Pick how your class is graded. Most syllabi list categories with a percentage, such as Homework 20%. That is Weighted %. If your teacher adds up points, pick Points.
  2. Add one row per assignment or category. A grade can be a percentage (92), a fraction (45/50) or a letter (B).
  3. Leave the grade blank for work that is not graded yet. It is left out of your current grade.
  4. Turn on Plan for a target grade to see the score you need on everything that is left.

How a weighted grade is calculated

Each grade is multiplied by its weight. The results are added up and divided by the total weight of the work that has been graded:

Grade = (grade₁ × weight₁ + grade₂ × weight₂ + …) ÷ (weight₁ + weight₂ + …)

Dividing by the graded weight, not by 100, is what makes your current grade fair partway through the term. Work that has not happened yet does not count as a zero.

Worked example

Homework is 92% and worth 20%. Quizzes are 85% and worth 30%. The midterm is 78% and worth 25%. The final exam (25%) has not happened yet.

(92 × 20 + 85 × 30 + 78 × 25) ÷ (20 + 30 + 25) = 6340 ÷ 75 = 84.53%, a B.

What do I need on the rest?

To finish the same class with an 85%, you need 85 × 100 = 8500 weighted points in total. You have 6340, so 8500 minus 6340 leaves 2160 to earn on the final (25%): 2160 ÷ 25 = 86.4%. The planner in the calculator does this for you. If only the final exam is left, the Final Grade Calculator gives the same answer with a what-if table.

If your class uses points

Add up the points you earned and divide by the points possible. With 45/50, 88/100 and 172/200, that is 305 ÷ 350 = 87.14%, a B. Big assignments count more simply because they are worth more points.

If a 150-point final is still to come and you want a 90%, you need 90% of 500 = 450 points in total. You have 305, so you need 145 more, which is 145 of the 150 points, or 96.67%.

Letter grade scale

Most US schools use one of these two scales. Your syllabus has the one your class uses, and you can switch between them in the calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What if my weights do not add up to 100%?

That is normal partway through the term. The calculator divides by the weight you have grades for, and tells you how much of the class that covers. If your weights add up to more than 100%, check your syllabus, because something has been entered twice.

My category has several scores. What do I enter?

Enter the category average, for example your overall homework percentage from your school portal. You can also add up the points, such as 172/200, and type that as a fraction.

What does a letter grade count as?

A letter you have earned counts as the middle of its range, for example a B counts as 85% on the standard scale. A letter you are aiming for counts as the lowest percentage that earns it. The calculator always shows which number it used. If you know the exact percentage, enter that instead.

Is a 0 the same as leaving a grade blank?

No. A typed 0 counts as a zero and pulls your grade down. A blank grade means not graded yet and is left out.

Why is my grade different from my school portal?

Teachers can drop the lowest score, round, or count extra credit in their own way. The calculator shows the exact math, so you can compare it with the rules in your syllabus.

Are my grades saved anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to our server.
