How to use the converter

  1. Choose Percentage to GPA or GPA to percentage.
  2. Type your number, or tap one of the common values.
  3. Keep the 4.0 (US) scale for American schools. Choose 5.0 or 10.0 if your school uses that scale.
  4. Read both answers. The letter grade method is how US schools build a GPA, and the simple formula is what many quick converters use.

Two ways to convert a percentage to a GPA

There is no single official formula. Schools and organizations use one of two approaches, and they give different answers.

1. The US letter grade method

US schools first turn a percentage into a letter grade, and the letter decides the grade points. On the plus/minus scale, 85% is a B (83 to 86.99%), and a B is worth 3.0. Every percentage from 83 to 86.99 gets the same 3.0.

This is the method behind a real US transcript GPA, so use it when you want to know what your GPA would be at an American school.

2. The simple formula

GPA = percentage ÷ 100 × 4      (the same as percentage ÷ 25)

85 ÷ 25 = 3.40. It is quick and gives a different number for every percentage, but no US school calculates GPA this way. Some applications and converters use it, especially for students from other countries. For a 5.0 or 10.0 scale, multiply by 5 or 10 instead of 4.

Why the answers are different

At 85%, the letter method gives 3.0 and the simple formula gives 3.40. The letter method rounds every grade down to the start of its letter, while the simple formula keeps every point of the percentage. If an application tells you which method to use, use that one.

GPA to percentage

Going the other way, a letter grade covers a range, so a GPA matches a range of percentages, not one exact number. A 3.0 is a B, which covers 83 to 86.99% on the plus/minus scale. A 3.5 sits between B+ (3.3) and A− (3.7), so it matches roughly 87 to 92.99%. The simple formula multiplies by 25 instead: 3.5 × 25 = 87.5%.
